Donate a Horse

Thanks so much for your interest in placing your horse at the Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center. It is only through the generosity of people like you that we can help our riders gain self-confidence, increase muscle tone and experience the thrill of riding a horse.  We may also be open to a care lease agreement with you and your equine partner.

Below are some considerations to keep in mind regarding our requirements for horses:

  • MahonHorses must have full and complete vision.
  • Horses must be sound in all four limbs. Soundness is important in order to have a rhythmic, cadenced, free-moving stride at the walk, trot and canter. Horses that can only walk with limited trotting are of minimal use to our riders, just as horses with an unbalanced stride could cause unwanted responses in our riders.
  • Horses should be between nine and sixteen years of age. Due to the amount of training we invest in our horses, we hope they will stay with us for several years. There are always exceptions, however.
  • Any additional information you have, such as copies of registration papers, health records, photos, awards, etc., would be helpful.

It is important that your horse feel comfortable around a variety of people. Horses in our program are ridden for not more than three one-hour sessions a day. However, many people handle them over the course of each day. Several volunteers will groom and tack the horse. And in addition to the rider, a horse may have a leader and up to two side walkers (volunteers on either side of the rider for support).

After reviewing the questionnaire, if we determine that your horse seems appropriate for our program, we will arrange a time to meet and ride the horse. At that time, if we think the horse seems suitable, we will ask for a 30-day trial period at Little Bit. Depending on the age of the horse, the trial period is sometimes longer.

We appreciate you thinking of Little Bit as a placement for your horse.

Riding experiences at Little Bit can lead to beneficial life changes as unique as each rider. Your support allows Little Bit to help build brighter futures and greater opportunities for each of our riders in a fun environment.
